Competitions: 2007

General Rules (Projected Digital and Prints)

Each picture will be critiqued by an evaluator or judge.  Scores for each entry range from 1 to 10, all recorded and accumulated from month to month.

A picture that receives a score of 8, 9 or 10 may not be re-entered in subsequent competitions except for the Best-of-the-Year Competition.  Those with scores of 7 or below may be re-entered in the open section at either of the next two competitions after its initial showing.

Titles will be read in advance of the judging and the names of photographers for any scores of 8, 9, or 10 will be announced immediately after the scoring.

All entries must have a title.  The title “Untitled” is unacceptable.  A title may not be reused except when re-entering a picture scoring 7 or below.  If two similar pictures are entered over time, they must have different titles.

No person may enter more than one picture of the same subject in the same competition.  For example, if the assignment is “dogs,” there should be two different dogs, rather than two views of the same dog.

Projected Digital

As of January 2007, CSCC is switching from a monthly slide competition to a monthly projected digital competition.   Monthly scores will be accumulated.  Walter Yewchuk is our new Projected Digital Chairman.

E-mail to: Walter (sungate@gate.net) no later than two weeks before each month’s Competition Night.  If you are sending well in advance of the next competition (for example, if you know you will be going away), please note which month the entries are for in the body of your message.

Prints

Starting in January 2007, self-stick labels (to be provided at the club the previous month) must be used on the back of all prints entered into competition.  They must be completely filled out—IN ADVANCE, and be placed in the upper left on the back of each print being entered.

A member can enter both print categories:  Color and Black & White

Color: three in total, 2 in the open section and 1 in the assigned section Black & White: two in total, 1 in open and 1 in assigned.

The minimum print size is 8” x 10” or 80 square inches.

The maximum size is 16” x 20”.

Prints must be firmly mounted or matted.  No frames will be permitted.

Upcoming events for February and March:

Tuesday, February 13, 7:30PM:  The Second Tuesday Group will resume at Carol's Pompano Beach, Palm-Aire apartment.  While I will be sending out a notice to existing members, interested people who have not attended before are welcome to join in.  The evening is most successful when both experienced and less experienced photographers show up to stimulate discussion and proffer a variety of viewpoints.  Just let me know by return email (or call my home phone--954.917.6715).

Friday, February 16, 7:30AM at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach:  There are still two places available for Michael Rosenbaum's mentoring on shooting birds.  Please let him know by email (polyandy@adelphia.net) if you have not already signed up and decide to attend.  Michael will notify you by email as to exactly where to meet.

Sunday, February 18, 2:30PM:  Field trip to Opa Locka, with its various buildings (City Hall, Public Park, old and new Tri-Rail stations, Shriners Meeting Hall, and several other buildings dotted along streets with names like Sesame, Ali Baba, and Sharazad) designed in the 1920s in the style of Arabian Nights.  The area is safe during the day, the locals very friendly, and there's lots of free parking adjacent to each site.  Members will be meeting at the Sartory Hall parking lot at 2:30.  Let Joe DeSanto know that you will be meeting there.  Otherwise, members can meet around 3:15-3:30 at the parking lot just east of the Opa Locka City Hall.  A place for early dinner will be announced in Opa Locka.

Tuesday, February 20, 7:30PM:  Program Night--camera discussion.  Everyone is urged to join in--it will be as good as attendance will allow.  Please bring your camera, your lenses, and your instruction book We not only hope that people who are not quite comfortable with their equipment, but we also need those who are experienced and skilled to answer questions and facilitate the conversation.  The plan is to divide the membership around tables based on the type and brand of cameras.  There definitely will be tables for Canon SLR owners, Nikon SLR owners, and point and shoot owners.  Based on attendance, these might be subdivided into smaller groups, but we won't be able to determine that until we are there.

Sunday, February 25, 7:30AM at Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Delray Beach:  There is still one slot available for Michael Rosenbaum's mentoring on shooting birds.  Please let him know by email (polyandy@adelphia.net) if you have not already signed up and decide to attend.  Michael will notify you by email as to exactly where to meet.

Tuesday, March 6, Meeting start at 7:30PM, but arrive earlier to present prints:  Competition Night.  Assigned Subject = Liquid Water, NOT ice and NOT snow.  Your Board of Directors suggests that, to avoid potentially boring pictures, while water must obviously be your main subject it should be in motion--in effect, doing something.  For example, waterfalls would work.  As would waves.  A boat sitting on still water will not, unless that water shows lots of whitecaps and the boat occupies a small proportion of the picture.  The definition is difficult--but therein lies the challenge.  Good luck with it and have fun capturing it.  Get your electronic pictures to Walter as soon as you can.

Please observe how Walter has asked to receive these images, different from the instructions we were using last year:

Size and Dimensions:  Pictures must be sent as jpgs, with a maximum of 72dpi (while prints require 300dpi, pictures sent and shown electronically do NOT.  (Increasing the dpi above 72 adds nothing to the quality of the projected image but does take longer to send and receive and Walter has to re-size them.)  In your re-sizing window, the pixel settings are at the top; print sizes, in the middle must be ignored when determining how to send via email.  If your picture is in horizontal or "landscape" format, the maximum horizontal dimension must be 1024 pixels (when you set this, the number of vertical pixels will adjust itself automatically).  If your picture is in vertical or "portrait" format, the maximum vertical dimension must be 768 pixels (when you set this, the number of horizontal pixels will adjust itself automatically).

You may, if you wish, send all four pictures (two open and two assigned subject) in the same email. Please do not send your images in "zip" format; this just makes more work.

Please title your pictures as follows:

Your initials, (then a space), then your group A or B category, followed by As for assigned,or Op for open (then a space), then the title of the picture.

An example:    CAR AAs Farm Wheels
And another example:
DZ BOp Blue Morpho Butterfly

If you are not sure how to do this, please feel free to call Carol Rogus (954.917.6715) and we can review it on the phone while looking at our respective screens.

Tuesday, March 13, 7:30PM:  Another meeting of the Second Tuesday Group at my apartment.

Tuesday, March 20, 7:30PM:  Tutorial on shooting flower close-ups.  This is a beautiful program of instruction from a "snow bird," Vicki Dolce.  Vicki shoots macro shots of flower centers, etc. using a unique approach getting spectacular results.  Even if you are not interested in macro photography yourself, do not miss her lovely pictures!

Sunday, March 25, 9:00 or 9:30AM--to be announced:  Field trip to the Dreyer Zoo in West Palm Beach.  Details will follow.
