The new mandatory school uniform policy forbids parents from opting their children out of the uniform policy except for "sincerely held religious beliefs of the student" and a few other trivial reasons. Parents are no longer allowed to opt their children out of the uniform policy because they object to it for philosophical reasons. Furthermore, superintendent Glenn Reynolds and the school board have made it clear that they will suspend students for violation of the uniform policy.
Where does their authority end and the authority of parents begin? Under this policy, the school board has complete control over the style of dress for our children - not the parents. The next steps by the school board will be to remove denim (jeans) from the policy, now that they have what they want - Glenn Reynolds and some board members have made this clear, and now that we have allowed them to delete the parental opt-out, we will have no choice but to go along with whatever they decide the uniform is . Perhaps next will come designation of the vendors for the uniforms, as has been done at some schools around the country. If we allow the board to get away with this, there is no apparent limit to what they can do. It is up to the parents of Polk County to inform the school board that they have exceeded their authority.
