On Friday the thirteenth of August 2004, Hurricane Charlie made a right turn while in the Gulf of Mexico, and bullseyed Bokeelia with 174 mph winds.  After wreaking havoc there, the storm came onto the mainland and followed US highway 17 to the northeast and passed directly over Belle Isle before continuing out into the Atlantic and dissappating.
