REPRESENTATIVE EXPERIENCE


Mr. Kannan's work experience covers all aspects of civil engineering including design, construction and management. He has handled various aspects of geology, geotechnical and highway engineering, deep foundations, dredging, hydrology and hydrogeology, surface water management, construction management, statistical quality control and quality assurance. He has also taught undergraduate engineering courses in theoretical soil mechanics, foundation engineering and engineering geology. Stabilization of sand and in-situ sand testing were his thesis topics. He has a number of publications to his credit, on engineering education, engineering geology, foundation engineering and most recently in sink hole investigations.

 

CIVIL ENGINEERING:

Mr. Kannan is an experienced civil engineer and has handled projects related to land development, permitting and project management. He has worked as a sub-consultant on minor and major highway design projects from the acquisition stage to providing specialist assistance to design teams in the capacity of a consultant. He is familiar with the Florida Department of Transportation design and construction standards.

Mr. Kannan has worked on various aspects of solid waste landfills including site selection, subsurface exploration, slope stability, cut-off wall design, and closure. He has also worked on the subsurface exploration and quality control aspects of water treatment and waste water treatment plants. He has conducted mounding analysis of small treatment plants and retention ponds for surface water management.

He is also familiar with the project management aspects of marine civil engineering works, dredging, heavy construction, large volume concrete pours and major civil engineering projects. Mr. Kannan is also an active advocate on promoting the use of the metric system. His experience covers projects in the USA, India, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. (Back to Main List)

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING:

Mr. Kannan has extensive experience in the design and installation of all types of foundation systems. These include large-diameter caissons, shallow spread footings, rigid and flexible post-tensioned mats, piled foundations, and earth supported structures. He has extensive design and installation experience in ground anchors, grouting and underpinning. His has also covered designs related to slope stability, soil instrumentation, soil stabilization, reinforced earth, the use of geotechnical fabrics, diaphragm walls, instrumentation, construction problems in soft soils.

Mr. Kannan has designed and supervised the installation of foundations for multi-family residential developments, commercial structures, industrial buildings and earth structures. He has also supervised rock blasting and dredging for deepening a harbor and cutting oil and gas pipeline trenches from offshore platforms. He has been involved in the design of foundation systems for concrete batching plants, refinery equipment and an experimental nuclear reactor.

In the field of transportation, Mr. Kannans experience covers various aspects of traffic, planning and highway design. As a part of his graduate study, he has completed a traffic study for the campus, designed a ramp merge-control system and conducted sponsored research on soil stabilization. Mr. Kannan has also designed stabilized pavements using various mechanical and chemical stabilization methods and also using geotechnical fabrics. ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING:

Mr. Kannan has prepared a number of Phase I Site Environmental Assessment reports, Phase II Assessments, Contamination Assessments and Remedial Action Plans for various sites in Florida. He has also completed the site rehabilitation of contaminated sites under Floridas Abandoned Tank Restoration Program. He has been involved in soil borings, sinkhole studies, installation of monitor wells, design of Land Application Systems and Ground Water Mounding studies. He has also conducted field and laboratory studies associated with surface water management programs for the design of residential developments and commercial properties.

Mr. Kannan has provided design and supervisory assistance in planning solid waste landfills, design of containment systems and in landfill closures. He has also coordinated and compiled reports on subsurface exploration related to landfill design and compliance. (Back to Main List)

EXPERT WITNESS:

Mr. Kannan has testified as an expert witness on cases involving aspects of foundation failures and material quality control aspects. He has also testified in the capacity of a geotechnical engineer and an engineering geologist in cases relating to sink hole investigations in Florida. Mr. Kannan has used geophysical test methods for subsurface mapping and has taught the use geophysical testing methods. Currently Mr. Kannan is also active in cases relating to condemnation of properties in connection with highway improvements. He works with major law firms as their expert in geotechnical and environmental issues. (Back to Main List)

PROJECT MANAGEMENT:

From the earliest days of his career, Mr. Kannan has been involved in project management at the local and international markets. In many of his assignments he was the first to introduce CPM/PERT and other computer-based project management tools. He has worked with small contractors as well as multi-national corporations. In this capacity, his responsibilities included all aspects of handling a project from concept to completion. He has worked on feasibility studies, design, planning, contracting, cash flow management, and handling contracts. He has worked with a consortium of international consultants. He has also handled the related labor relations and staffing, supervising the work of subcontractors and authorizing payments. As a resident engineer on many projects, he has been responsible for coordination of the work with architects, engineers, statutory agencies and clients.

Mr. Kannan has to his credit heavy industrial buildings such as heavy manufacturing facilities, textile mills, workshops, luxury hotels, marine civil engineering projects such as wharves and breakwaters. His experience also covers overburden drilling, rock blasting, dredging soil and rock. He has also been involved with a number of underpinning and grouting projects for foundation stabilization. As a project manager, he has worked with with British, American, Japanese, Norwegian, Swedish and Dutch joint-ventures in using their state of the art equipment, some designed and fabricated specially for these projects.

Mr. Kannan is familiar with AutoCad, MathCad and is familiar with Macintosh, UNIX and Windows based CADD systems. (Back to Main List)

TEACHING AND RESEARCH:

Mr. Kannan's philosophy of engineers training engineers gave him an opportunity to teach undergraduate engineering classes. As a part of the pioneering team of engineer-educators, he was instrumental in setting up the soil mechanics laboratory at the Nanyang Technological Institute in Singapore, now named the Nanyang Technological University. Mr. Kannan designed the first curricula for soil mechanics, foundation engineering and soil mechanics laboratory. He was also involved with the team of teachers supervising the students' in-house practical training and industrial apprenticeship programs, both parts of the curriculum. He was actively involved in the selection of main frame computers for the school and in the electronic data acquisition equipment for the laboratory. During his tenure, Mr. Kannan was the principal lecturer teaching basic soil mechanics for a class of 200 students and tutoring in groups of 20. During his tenure with Nanyang Technological Institute, Mr. Kannan was also involved in organizing and participating in international conferences on speciality topics related to the Mass Rapid Transit System for Singapore and the related construction problems. He also participated in the First International Conference on Case Studies in Geotechnical Engineering at St. Louis, MO. He is the Metrication representative for the Florida West Coast Division of American Society of Civil Engineers.

Soil stabilization was Mr. Kannan's research topic for his graduate work and he has continued his interest in this area by working with different soil conditions around the world. His interests cover stabilization of sand, residual soils and volcanic ash soils. He has also followed the research on correlation of field tests to engineering behavior of soils, including the cone penetrometer and pressuremeter. Current research activities include topics on foundation design and properties of karst terrane. (Back to Main List)

QUALITY CONTROL AND MATERIAL TESTING:

As an engineer in charge of material testing laboratories, Mr. Kannan has been involved in the testing of soil, concrete and asphalt. He has implemented a number of quality control and quality assurance programs for control of earthwork, and roads. He has implemented a Statistical Quality Control program for the construction of a refinery involving high strength concrete, slip-forming and large volume concrete. He was a charter member of the Singapore Concrete Institute, established on the lines of American Concrete Institute. Mr. Kannan also has worked on soil stabilization with different additives for various specific needs ranging from road bases to foundation improvement works. Currently he is working with recycled concrete as a road-base material. (Back to Main List)

CIVIC:

Mr. Kannan is actively involved in community programs in line with his training and experience. He volunteers as a tutor for the Pinellas County school system, and has participated in the >Teach-in< program. He fills in as a judge for the school science fair and other competitions at local and State level. He was the chairman of the Junior Engineering Technical Society of the Pinellas Chapter of the Florida Engineering Society and promoted engineering careers among school students.

He has served as a member of the Transportation Council and the Environmental Council of the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, and was also a member of the Greater Tampa Bay Chamber of Commerce. He is one of the directors and a charter member of the Indian Business Association of Tampa Bay, a professional association trying to promote better business ties between the USA and India.

Mr. Kannan teaches an adult sunday school class at Pasadena Community Church, St. Petersburg, FL. He has led christian youth groups in USA, India and Singapore since 1973. Mr. Kannan is a US citizen and is a Florida resident since 1984. (Back to Main List)
