Here is the latest on what the actors are doing now. I plan to add some small pictures and break this page up into links (one of these years :-)-- in the meantime, please bear with me by paging down to get to the goodies, which are now divided first by the latest news and then by cast member.
I don't have any addresses to reach the actors, sorry! Any career-based info that you can send me (no Enquirer-type gossip) will be much appreciated.
Yee-hah! An Update at Last! 9/14/01
John Corbett reprises his performance as Aidan Shaw in 12 episodes of this season’s "Sex and the City" on HBO. Catch reruns later this fall and look for six new episodes starting January ‘02. His latest movies, “Dinner Rush” and “Serendipity”, open on Sept. 14 and Oct 5. Agent Pat continues to keep John’s fans updated at her classy site, The John Corbett Web Page.
Janine Turner’s series “Strong Medicine” continues on Lifetime in its second season. The Highly Unofficial Janine Turner Fan Page has lots of pictures but hasn’t been updated in a couple of years. Like I should talk. You can find a few blessedly non-fake-nude sites devoted to her at The Janine Turner Web Ring.
John Cullum is wowing them on Broadway in the unlikely monickered musical “Urinetown”, about a municipality with its toilets held hostage. Rosanna Bencoach has just started an official web page for John—drop by About John Cullum and give them both a round of applause.
Darren Burrows (he’s dropped the “E.”) appeared in “Lady in the Box” last year. He recently completed “Get Outta the Boat” and is waiting for it to come out, sometime, somewhere! It’s apparently an actor’s sorrow to do much work that never sees the light of the projector bulb.
Barry Corbin and Elaine Miles both appeared at annual fan gathering Moosedays in Roslyn, Washington this July, giving fans the time of their lives.
Rob Morrow co-wrote, acted in and directed "Maze”, which had a brief run on the Starz movie channel this summer. The film won a special jury mention for New Directions from American Independents at the AFI Fest 2000 in Hollywood, the Spirit of Independent’s Directing Award at the Ft. Lauderdale Film Festival, and the Audience Choice Honorable Mention at the San Jose Film Festival, Cinequest 11. The indy production, which follows the love life of an artist who has Tourette’s syndrome, also stars Laura Linney (“The Truman Show”, “You Can Count on Me”). Don’t keep the kids in the room if you catch this one—it’s adult material that features casual but full frontal nudity (an artist’s model) in the opening scene.
Peg Phillips is founder and artistic director of the Woodinville Repertory Theatre in Washington state. Although there’s no recent news about her accident of Christmas 1999, she appears to still be very active on staff.
Quick Update 5/27/00
Look for John Corbett to guest star on Showtime's "Sex and the City". Janine Turner has a new series on Lifetime starting in July. She'll play a doctor in "Strong Medicine", produced by Whoopi Goldberg. John Cullum may finally get his Emmy for his portrayal of Dr. Mark Greene's father on "ER" this spring. Cullum and Barry Corbin both appeared in the recent movie, "Held Up". Rob Morrow's movie, "Labor Pains", went straight to video (priced for rental), but his TV movie has been renamed "The Thin Blue Lie", also starring Randy Quaid and Paul Sorvino, and is due August 1.
No new word on Peg Phillips, but here's the address to which you can send your well-wishes: Peg Phillips, c/o Woodinville Repertory Theater, PO Box 2003, Woodinville, WA 98072.
Some Good News, Some Bad News 12/27/99
We're sorry to report that Peg Phillips was struck by a car and suffered a broken hip and wrist a few days before Christmas. She appears to be handling it with her famous aplomb, however, and is reported to have been released from the hospital for the holidays. We're waiting on an address for well wishes-- I'll post to alt.tv.northern-exp when we get it.
This fall, Darren Burrows filmed "The Lady in the Box" a mystery set in Milwaukee with Apesanahkwat, and will also appear in "Morning" co-starring Tess Harper and Barry Bell.
John Corbett's new movie has been retitled "On Hostile Ground" (it was previously called "Sinkhole"). That's still his voice you hear in Ford's SUV commercials, as well as on A&E's "The Love Chronicles".
Diane K. reports that Rob Morrow has filmed a cable TV movie in Canada called "The Goon Squad", co-starring Randy Quaid and Paul Sorvino.
What?! Some News, Finally?!? 9/11/99
Janine's making a new TV movie based on a Barbara Taylor Bradford romance novel, John Cullum's been doing summer stock across the country as Emile in South Pacific, John Corbett has a new series coming up and has also signed to do more Ford commercials, Rob Morrow's TV series has disappeared, but we caught a glimpse of him on Entertainment Tonight looking as handsome as ever at the premiere of Calista Flockhart's summer show on Broadway. And congrats to our Australian friends who will finally be able to watch NX again starting November 2!
News Flash! April 5, 1999: The A&E schedule has been changed to Monday-Friday at 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. ET, 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. PT.
News 3/26/99:
Janine Turner appears with Antonio Sabato Jr. and Robert Wagner in TBS's first made-for-TV movie, "Fatal Error" on Sunday, March 28 at 8pm Eastern. Check your cable guide for local times and channel.
News 2/24/99:
Look for Darren Burrows on The X-Files this Sunday night, 2/28/99, as a bank robber who contributes to a very bad Monday for our favorite FBI agents. It's 9 pm Eastern on your local Fox station.
Latest! 1/11/99:
That new NBC series for Rob Morrow, "Nearly Yours", has been rescheduled to start next fall rather than this spring. Meanwhile, he's been spotted recently on a ski vacation in Vermont with his new wife, Debbon Ayer. If you've been hankering to see Janine Turner in something other than NX reruns (though why you wouldn't be satisfied with that, we can't imagine), you can now rent her movie with Pauly Shore, "Curse of the Inferno".
Not Very Timely News Flash 11/20/98:
Janine Turner co-starred with Jamie Sheridan in "Beauty" a TV movie on CBS in October. She's also signed to star with Antonio Sabato, Jr., and a nasty computer virus in a science fiction TBS movie called "Reaper". Darren Burrows has a new movie project set in the 70's rock era-- more when we hear about it. He'll also appear in "The Hilo Country" with Woody Harrelsonopening in January. John Corbett is working on a four-hour mini-series called "Family Shield", about three generations of cops, and has signed for a new Fox series, "The Judger". It's a western set on Mars. No kidding. John also remains a favorite on those ubiquitous Ford commercials. Don McManus has been guest-starring on several shows, including "Any Day Now" on Lifetime, and "The Pretender". Rob Morrow is supposed to be in the middle of doing an independent film with Kyra Sedgwick called "Labor Pains", in which he plays the boyfriend who doesn't know she's pregnant (along with everyone else) until the last minute.
News Flash 9/4/98:
Rob Morrow should be filming soon on a new NBC half-hour comedy series called "Nearly Yours" intended as a mid-season replacement. The show is produced by Dreamworks, co-stars newcomer Heather Burns and will be directed by James Burrows (Emmy winner for Frasier and Cheers). We're betting it's filmed in New York, where Rob should be settling in with his new wife Debbon Ayer.
Increasingly Rare News Flash 7/6/98:
The summer's been relatively quiet, but keep your eyes open for "Smoke Signals", an independent Native American film that features both Elaine Miles (Marilyn) and Cynthia Geary (Shelly) in small roles. The movie has good buzz as the arbiter of a strengthening Native American films by Native Americans genre.
John Cullum is signed for a CBS TV series this fall-- "To Have and To Hold" with Faith Ford. firms up. Rob Morrow's "Magic" still hasn't gotten off the ground after many months, but you should be able to see him in "Into Your Heart" when it opens this fall (Note: This movie seems to have fallen into a black hole-- I couldn't find it in any of the holiday season releases).
Too Late News Flash 4/29/98:
My apologies-- I lost access to my account for several days, and couldn't post that Darren Burrows had a guest spot on "NYPD Blue" April 28. He played a young veteran who got mixed up in an friend's death, not a nice character at all. Darren did a good job as a hostile informant, and was nearly unrecognizable again with short blond hair.
News Flash 4/24/98:
Rob Morrow has set his wedding date for October. His mini-series, "Only Love", will air on CBS May 10 and 11. The wolf howl I did for the cameras at the sneak preview of Disney's Animal Kingdom did not make it into the animal sounds segment on the Regis and Kathie Lee show on 4/22.
News Flash 4/2/98:
Cynthia Geary is now appearing in a new series on the WB, "You're the One", which premiered Sunday, April 19 at 9:30 ET. Reviews are looking as bad as any I've ever seen, about 10 to 1 against. Sympathy to Cynthia, who deserves better. Rob Morrow announced his engagement to Debbon Ayer on the Regis and Kathie Lee show on 3/31, not an April Fool's joke in spite of her punnish name. He also appeared on Conan O'Brien and the Daily Show in April.
News Flash 3/25/98:
TNT is putting on a strong campaign for "The Day Lincoln Was Shot" featuring Rob Morrow as John Wilkes Boothe. The TV move will premiere Sunday, April 12 at 8 pm, 10 pm and 12 midnight EST, and will be repeated on TNT several times in the following weeks.
Yep, that is Cynthia Geary advertising the Zodiac Psychic Line on the Psychic Network.
News Flash 2/27/98:
Janine Turner is already heading back to work at the end of March on a CBS movie named "Beauty", based on the novel by Susan Wilson. It's a modern version of the classic "beauty and the beast" plot. Spoiler reviews of the book can be found on Amazon-- proceed with caution.
News Flash 2/20/98:
Barry Corbin guested as the father of Drew Carey's new love interest on "The Drew Carey Show" on Feb. 25, and also had a small part in Tom Selleck's "The Closer" the same week. See also Rob Morrow as Albert Brook's brother in the well-scripted comedy "Mother" on Cinemax starting Friday, Feb. 20. Commercials for his CBS mini-series, "Only Love", provided plenty of heat during the Nagano Olympics coverage. It's due in May. And just so I'll stop getting mail about it, John Corbett is doing a whole raft load of Ford commercials, all over the place.
News Flash 1/27/98:
John Cullum reprised his role on "ER" as Dr. Mark Greene's father on Thursday, Feb. 5 (NBC, 10 pm ET). Greene, played by Anthony Edwards, flies home to San Diego when his mother becomes ill, and butts heads with his dad over her care. Edwards could be called the most successful of former NX'ers, having recently won the Golden Globe award for best actor in a dramatic series. Not to mention the stunning bonus ($1 million) he recently received after NBC agreed to pay $13 million per episode for next season.
Newest News 1/19/98:
"Circle of Deceit" was a two-hour tv movie on ABC in January starring Janine Turner as a woman who fakes her own death after discovering her husband is unfaithful. "Leave It to Beaver" with Janine as June Cleaver comes out on video Jan. 20.
Did you miss your chance to finally see that lost CBS science fiction pilot starring John Corbett? Originally named "The Osiris Chronicles", the two-hour TV movie aired on UPN Tuesday, January 27 as "The Warlord: Battle for the Galaxy". It's written by novelist Caleb Carr (The Alienist) and directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins, Innerspace). John plays Justin Thorpe, who joins up with a renegade, an old general and others to rescue his kidnapped sister from the Engineers, who plan to destroy all families (the movie was briefly named "My Sister's Lost in Space", but apparently cooler heads prevailed). Yup, we finally get to see John in that leather outfit. Also starring John Pyper Ferguson, Carolyn McCormick, J. Madison Wright, Marjorie Monaghan and Rod Taylor. Or you could watch the State of the Union Address.
John also has a nice new unofficial fan page by Sheri, The Unofficial John Corbett Web Site, now at a new provider without ad popups.
Very New News 1/8/98:
Rob Morrow is becoming a real world traveler, currently filming in Amsterdam and South Africa for a new four-hour CBS miniseries, "Only Love". He co-stars with Marisa Tomei (Best Supporting Actress Oscar for My Cousin Vinny) and Mathilda May (The Jackal) in the drama based on Erich Segal's latest novel. Expect over-the-top romanticism from the man who blew us away with "Love Story" 30 years ago. Hey, I was still in junior high-- what else can I say?
Rob will play (ahem) neurosurgeon Matthew Hiller, whose former Italian love Silvia (May) shows up as a dying patient after leaving him for his own good 15 years earlier. The Hallmark Entertainment miniseries will follow the couple through 20 years and several continents (and probably four boxes of Kleenex). If you want plot spoiler reviews, look up Segal's book in Amazon or Barnes and Noble .
Cynthia Geary is finally back in the public eye with her 1996 movie, "The Heist", costarring Andrew McCarthy, on HBO this month. And if that's not enough, she has a new mid-season replacement comedy series on the WB (Warner Brothers cable) called "You're the One" about a Southern woman who marries a nice Jewish boy from New York, played by newcomer Elon Gold. No date yet for the spring premiere, but we'll keep you posted!
Cynthia has been married to LA real estate man Robert Coron for three years. Yup-- he's Jewish, and she's a graduate of Ol' Miss.
New News 12/12/97:
Former NX'ers are busting out all over with new offspring! Congratulations to Janine Turner, who had a daughter, Juliette Loraine, on November 22. For all of you who keep asking, she's still single and she's still keeping mum about the identity of the child's father. We wish her much happiness and a baby who starts sleeping through the night early :-)
Darren E. Burrows and wife Melinda added a new baby to their family this year, and we hear that he is really enjoying his three small sons. Keep a sharp eye out for Darren's small role in Steven Spielberg's new feature, "Amistad", which opened December 9. You won't have to look so hard to see him in his next film, "The Hilo Country", about the troubles some Midwesterners had returning to their farms after fighting in World War II, featuring Woody Harrelson. More details coming as soon as we get 'em!
Rob Morrow:
News 10/31/97: Rob Morrow has signed to star in "Magic", a love triangle story set in Berlin before the Wall came down. He will play a West Berlin financier who is rivals with a magician (John Hurt) for the affections of a young woman played by Swiss-born actress Irene Jacobs (Othello, The Double Life of Veronique, Red, All Men Are Mortal). The Shakepearean-trained Jacobs plays a violinist who runs away with a traveling magic show. The film is written and directed by Jark Garfein.
Would you rather costar with Rob Morrow or David Duchovny? The answer was easy for "Millennium" star Lance Hendriksen, who turned down a part in the first X-Files movie (due summer 98) to play Lincoln against Rob Morrow's John Wilkes Booth in the TNT production of "The Day Lincoln Was Shot", based on the classic history text by Jim Bishop. Filming started mid-June in Virginia, and the movie will be shown April 12, 1998. Well, no one can say that Rob is getting typecast these days, although playing a legendary racist and murderer has got to take some career courage.
Rob Morrow starred in the very well received Albert Brooks' comedy "Mother" early this year, playing Brooks' brother, with Debbie Reynolds as their mom. Reynolds garnered a Best Actress nomination at the Golden Globes for her role, and recently received the American Comedy Awards Lifetime Achievement honors. Brooks and his cowriter won two best screenplay awards for the script, including one from the coveted New York Film Critics' Circle. I really like Brooks' quote describing the film: "There are two kinds of mothers in the world-- the first believes her children can do no wrong. This movie is about the other kind."
Rob Morrow's May 1996 movie, "Last Dance", is now available on video, costarring Oscar nominee Sharon Stone. He plays a young lawyer who becomes involved with his Death Row client.
Rob has a new film coming out costarring Jayne Brook (Dr. Diane Grad on Chicago Hope-- the only character I still like), about a tragic romantic triangle. It's an indie film called "Elements" also featuring Claire Forlani (The Rock, Basquiat, Mallrats) and Jake Webber. The film marks the directorial debut of the writing-directing team of Sean K. Smith and Anthony Stark. I'd say keep an eye on the various film festivals around the country for an early chance to see it.
Per Sarah Drury of the UK, who saw Rob on a British talk show, he was rehearsing for a play opening March 5 in the West End of London. "Birdy" closed April 20 at the Comedy Theater to good reviews for Rob as the adult Al.
Rob is reportedly going on to direct his first full-length feature film, "Time on Fire" (?) in association with NYC's the Shooting Gallery, which helps produce low budget films such as the Oscar-winning "Sling Blade".
Janine Turner:
Janine appeared on Entertainment Tonight in late August for the premiere of "Leave It to Beaver", looking stunning in a black, lacy evening gown, shoulder length hair up in a twist, and very red lipstick. She was six months pregnant at the time, which means the baby should be due between Thanksgiving and Christmas. (My guess was a little on the late side...)
Janine wins the award for going from busiest former NX'er to a lady of leisure during her pregnancy, but she was booked solid before. Rebecca DeMornay will take her place opposite William H. Macy (best supporting actor Oscar nominee for "Fargo") in the suspense-thriller "Pascagoula", a USA TV original set in Mississippi filmed in Houston this summer. Janine has plenty of work already in the can, however, so we'll still see her around.
Janine Turner's costar in the summer 97 feature "Curse of the Inferno" is... Paulie Shore? If this is a comedy squewering big disaster movies like "Dante's Peak" or "Volcano", the film could do well. This one is available only on the Movie Channel, which I don't receive. Anyone seen it? Send me a review. Many more folks saw her turn as a bride kidnapped by Native Americans in "Stolen Women" on CBS last spring. Janine talked the trainer into letting her buy the horse she rode in the film.
Janine appeared as June Cleaver in the movie remake of "Leave It to Beaver" with Christopher McDonald as Ward. It opened August 22 last year and rapidly disappeared, but expect it on video soon (Jan. 20). The Beav is played by a kid from Texas, Cameron Finley, neighbor of puck@cyberramp.net (Thanks, Puck!).
John Corbett:
Corbett's last job (until the show was dropped by Fox early in January '98) was starring in "The Visitor," a Fox Television science fiction drama from Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, (producers of "Independence Day" and "Stargate"), about a World War II pilot who somehow lands in present day Utah, and now has special and mysterious powers. The series was on Fox's fall schedule as the Friday 8 pm (EST) leadin to "Millennium", formerly held by cancelled "Sliders" (due to be revived on TNT).
News 7/10/97: John Corbett's turn on the dance floor with Julia Roberts in "My Best Friend's Wedding" ended up on the cutting room floor when the director decided to expand Rupert Everett's part (who gained a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor, Comedy). Our sympathies, John!
John Corbett (Chris Stevens) appears in the action flick, "Volcano", with Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche, which opened May 1997 and is now on video. He filmed a new science fiction TV movie cum pilot last year, but we may never see it unless CBS sells it to the SciFi Channel-- it's called "The Osiris Chronicles" (see Newest News for the air date on UPN). John was dressed in raw leather in the publicity shot I glimpsed. Last we heard, he still owns the Fenix Underground nightclub (mailto:fenixinc@earthlink.net) in Seattle, and can be heard in commercials for it. John also appeared in a USA TV movie called "The Morrison Murders" playing an man whose brother is accused of murder.
Sad News
The saddest news is that Bibi Besch, who played Maggie's mother, Jane O'Connell, died in September 1996 after a battle with cancer. Besch did an outstanding job in two of the best NX episodes, "Burning Down the House" and "Grosse Pointe 48230". She was probably better known to movie audiences around the world as the mother of Captain Kirk's only son, and one heck of a cook, cosmically speaking, in "Star Trek: Wrath of Khan".
More sad news-- Village Pizza, one of the businesses on Roslyn's main street that can be seen in the opening credits, burned to the ground in the winter of 96. The owner, who had frequently fed cast, crew and tourists, died from a blaze-related heart attack. His widow is nearly finished with rebuilding the restaurant on the same site. You can send cards to the Harry Balmer family at 21 N. 1st, Roslyn, WA 98941.
Peg Phillips:
The good news is that Peg Phillips, rumors to the contrary, is still alive and well. She was replaced by Celeste Holme on "Home of the Brave" after the pilot, but has been seen guesting as a crusty judge on "Suddenly Susan", the Brooke Shields comedy vehicle. It was nice to see her looking healthy after all her problems last year. Peg is active in Seattle theatre workshops and other causes.
Barry Corbin:
Barry Corbin's series started in August 96 on USA but seems to be in its last few showings. "The Big Easy" is based on the 1987 movie starring Dennis Quaid and Ellen Barkin. The TV version features Tony Crane and Susan Walters reprising the roles of a New Orleans detective and the prosecuting attorney. Corbin plays the sheriff, and is definitely less corrupt, although more crusty than his movie counterpart. USA was airing the show Sundays at 10 pm ET, but you may have to hunt for it now.
Corbin was the main NX star appearing at Moosefest 97 (http://www.cicelys.com) in Roslyn, a fan gathering that may become a yearly event. He performed a one-man show, presided over the banquet, and did a "where are they now" update of all the characters, in character as "Maurice". Moultrie Patten (Walt) and Iris Dement ("Our Town") also appeared.
And More:
Teri Polo (Michelle Capra) went the s-f route, too, co-starring with Charlie Sheen in "The Arrival" (now on video), about aliens who are heard before they are seen. Reviews of the movie were mixed-- s-f fans seem to like it, but nobody thinks Teri had a lot to do in the film beside the standard female sidekick schtick. Teri was recently in a Lifetime TV movie as the rebellious sister of Lynda Carter (Wonderwoman) as a religious leader. Teri was barely recognizable in a hairstyle as dark as Maggie's original barber cut, and even shorter.
News 10/31/97: You can see Teri Polo in "House of Frankenstein" premiering November 2 on NBC. Note 11/14: It did very poorly in the ratings-- half as well as X-Files the same night.
John Cullum (Holling Vincouer) just guest-starred as Dr. Mark Greene's father on ER Nov. 13. I wonder if Anthony Edwards (who played super-allergic lawyer Mike Monroe on NX during the fourth season) had any say in who was cast as his TV dad?
John also spent part of last year on Broadway as Cap'n Andy in "Show Boat", at the Gershwin Theater. For those who only know him from NX, he won a Tony in his previous life as a Broadway star, and has a spectacular singing voice that was rarely heard on the show. His latest project was starring in the 50th anniversary revival of Arthur Miller's drama, "All My Sons," at the Laura Pels Theatre (45th & Broadway). The play opened on May 4th and closed on June 22nd.
John has also appeared on primetime TV as a crime suspect on "Law and Order", and he recently did a guest appearance on "Nothing Sacred", a controversial new ABC show about an unorthodox priest.
Darren Burrows (Ed Chigliak) appeared in "Ruby Ridge: An American Tragedy" last May on CBS The four-hour mini-series also starred Randy Quaid, Laura Dern, Diane Ladd and Kirsten Dunst in a fact-based story about separatists.
Cynthia Geary (Shelly Tambo) appeared in two 1996 movies: "The Awakening" on CBS with David Beecroft, and "The Heist" with Andrew McCarthy, which was featured at Cannes last year and just came out on video (Dec. 97). Cynthia married near the end of the series, and still lives in Seattle, where she is owner of a blues nightclub, the Paragon. I wonder if she ever takes a turn at the mic?
Elaine Miles (Marilyn Whirlwind) appeared in "The Rez", a Canadian Broadcasting Company television series. In the past, she has been spotted around Seattle with her baby (born during the last year of the show) who should be starting kindergarten soon. She also makes appearances across the country as a dancer at Native American gatherings.
Jessica Lundy (Elaine, Joel's faithless NY girlfriend) showed up as one of Charlie's girlfriends on Fox's "Party of Five" this season, but we suspect she won't be around for long because Kirsten is due to come back. I'm hooked on this hidden treasure of a show, anyway!
All corrections and updates welcome-- especially from the horse's mouth! Much thanks to Danny and Benny for all their updates in alt.tv.northern-exp, and to the rest of the devoted fans there and elsewhere on the web who have contributed so much to this page.
