Northern Exposure fans pampered here

Greetings and welcome! I'm Kimiye Tipton. I maintain the The NX Guide Online and the The NX Frequently Asked Questions Online for the denizens of the Internet. You can send comments here: [kimiye@att.net].

This home page was born in Dec. 1994 (over ten years!) and at its peak averaged over 10,000 hits a month from fans all over the world. I will keep it going as long as enough people seem to enjoy it. Amazingly enough, we still get over 5,000 hits a month!

Third Season DVD Due June 14th!

Check out Universal Home Video's page announcing the complete third season DVD this summer! Unlike the first two short seasons, this includes all 23 episodes on three DVD's, with deleted scenes and other extras for a total of 17:37 hours. See more details here. I haven't seen the DVD's yet, but hope to give you a better idea of what's included very soon! The list price is $39.98-- available at K-Mart, Target, Best Buy and many other stores. Both Amazon and Overstock offer free or very reasonable shipping. No big discounts found on this one yet!

NX Missing from Hallmark Again!

Looks like NX has gone missing from the Hallmark Channel again... See this link at the Hallmark Channel for the schedule if it ever returns-- float your cursor over each date to get the episode descriptions.

Where to get the latest news

There are several mailing lists and online groups that keep up with the show's stars and the fan groups. Look up Northern Exposure in Yahoo Groups or Google Groups.

One day the Travel Channel may show the TV Road Trip episode featuring Northern Exposure with fans visiting Roslyn, Washington, and even some footage of on-location filming. I'll certainly report it here, since it will feature my debut as a cinematographer. Ten years late, but hey!

The What's New page is a rarely updated feature on what the stars are doing now (last update 9/14/01), while the What Was page gives some info on the end of the show and some souvenir sources.

Sad News: Peg Philips passed away on Nov. 7, 2002, at the age of 84. You can send a memorial in her name to the Woodinville Repertory Theatre which she founded.

A little history

Northern Exposure premiered on July 12, 1990, and ended on July 26, 1995, with a total of 110 episodes. No more shows will be made because the sets and props have been sold, the production company has gone out of business, and the cast and crew have gone on to other work.

However, the series lives on in people's hearts, even though I don't have any reports of continued syndication in the U.S. The show was aired in many countries such as Australia, Italy, Japan, Finland, Spain, Ireland, and South Africa, and used to be on satellite in Canada.

Where to get tapes of the show

The first three seasons are out on DVD! Check everywhere from Target to Amazon to find these sets that are easy to spot with their colorful quilted and zippered jackets. The first season of eight episodes is intact, while the second season of seven shows has most of the original copyrighted music removed.

Eleven episodes on VHS tape were released several years ago from Columbia House, a few of which you may be able to track down (yes, only 11 shows out of the whole 110 were available commercially). These are still a collector's item since they include all of the original music! You can sometimes find them on eBay or from other online stores.

Although it's not legal, there are usually copies of tapes or DVD's of the later seasons on eBay. Please don't ask me to make tapes for you. I'm trying to get through life with minimum exposure to lawyers, doctors and the police.

NX stuff you can download with your web browser

  1. The NX Guide Online. Brief descriptions of all 110 episodes, with writers, directors and guest stars. You may have to tell your browser to "File, Save As" if you want to keep a copy of the file on your PC after you load the page.
  2. The NX Frequently Asked Questions Online. If you think others may have asked the same questions you have, look at this collection of information from all over the internet.
  3. More pictures to look at, some from my 1993 Seattle/Roslyn vacation and some from other fans.

If you couldn't save a copy of the on-line guide above, send me mail [kimiye@att.net].

NX links

  1. I love going to megafan Meg's MegaMoose Page.
  2. Debi Richard doesn't host her episode-by-episode Music List any more, the most complete listing so far of the marvelously eclectic songs featured on the series, but you can get it here from Kipp Teague.
  3. Geoff Owen's Northern Exposure Miscellany has, alas, disappeared from the internet.
  4. Here's Duvelle's amazing episode transcript page, where you can read eleven complete episodes.
  5. Kevin Wright's Culture NX page with his growing quotes list. Access to this page is iffy, but sometimes it works. A must for looking up the quote that you just can't quite remember.
  6. The fan organizers of Moose Days made this Northern Exposure fan gathering a joy for all who had the privilege of attending, including me! My latest visit was late July 1999, in picturesque Roslyn, Washington, where the show was filmed. Visit the WebMoosester's site, and keep an eye out for announcements of the new gathering sponsored by the town locals!

Northern Exposure (the logo with the "o" underlined) is a trademark of Universal City Studios, Inc., all rights reserved. I have no official connection with the series or Universal, although I once got to stand across the street in Roslyn, WA, and stare slack-jawed at the show being filmed.
