Utensil Creatures
by
Nita Mehnert
KITCHEN SCULPTURE:
a series of whimsical birds and insects morphed from
everyday objects associated with 'woman's work'. Symbols of
kitchen
drudgery become fanciful creatures in this series. Each is
absolutely unique
with its own, often comical, personality. The artist's direct
words on this
series are wonderful and here quoted in full:
"As a young
housewife
(sans dishwasher) I assembled creatures in
my mind as I washed dishes. Thinking 'this utensil looks like
bird feet', or
'I could make an insect from this'. But at the time, with a
husband in
college and young babies, I couldn't spare a spatula for
something it was
never designed for. With kids grown and time for serious art
work, I
haunted the thrift stores for discarded pots, pans and utensils
in a
state of disuse and started a collection of unwanted kitchen
paraphernalia,
vowing to give them new life. These pieces are designed to be
whimsical
and bring a smile to the viewer, who on second glance might
recognize a
familiar article from kitchens past."
