Congratulations on your new Puppy
Please Read Carefully
1. NO MILK! Puppies do not need milk once they are weaned. Milk will give them diarrhea, you don’t need that kind of trouble A good home remedy for diarrhea [caused by change of diet or stress] is rice and hamburger, cooked, and mixed together. Season with salt and pepper. Cool and feed until diarrhea is gone. If it persists longer than 2 days, take the puppy to the Vet. It could be caused by something else and need medical attention.
2. Feeding—Keep them on the same diet they were raised on. A change of diet can give them diarrhea. They were raised on Iam’s Mini Chunks dry dog food soaked with warm water till soft, then mixed with Pedigree canned dog food [about half and half]. Feed twice a day until the pup is 6 mos.old, then once a day the rest of it’s life unless directed otherwise by your Vet. Keep dry Iam’s always available along with fresh water. Rawhide bones help keep their teeth clean and strong. Never feed chicken or pork bones. Until the puppy is 6 mos. I boil chicken, [legs and thighs] take the skin and bones out then chop the meat up in small pieces. I keep it in the fridge and mix some to each meal along with the Iams and Pedigree. Also be sure to season it with salt and pepper. They need salt in their diet the same as we do.
3. Hypoglycemia [Low Blood Sugar] can occur in puppies and be very scary. The symptoms can vary and include trembling, anxiety, or collapse. Exact causes are unknown but include stress, excess physical exercise, food intolerance, not eating enough, allergies or fright. The "quick fix" is to make a solution of Kayo corn syrup, sugar, or honey and water till sweet to the taste, but not syrupy, and feed with an eyedropper or syringe to bring them out of it. Discontinue when recovered and see your vet for further instructions.
4. Fleas---A major problem in Florida, but it can be easily controlled. First do not use a flea collar or flea powder. The collar can cause a rash and the powder can be licked. Neither one is good, nor they are not an effective flea control. The best control is the use of Advantage. It is a liquid that you put on the back of their neck once a month. It kills the fleas and prevents reinfection. Once the fleas are gone for several months, you can discontinue the treatments. Repeat if the fleas return.
5. Children and Puppies---while most children love a tiny puppy, they can squeeze, drop, step, or fall on a young puppy and do great harm. Supervision is recommended when young children handle the new puppy to prevent any accidents.
6. Your puppy will become a part of your family. Keep it safe, healthy, and happy. Never let it mingle with stray dogs or cats. They can bring unwanted fleas or diseases into your household. Protect your investment, your new "family member", and your home from pests and diseases. See your Vet regularly for the puppies shots and check-ups and it will live to give you many years of love, enjoyment, and devotion. Remember that they can’t go to the doctor by themselves, they depend on you.
7. If you have any questions or problems with your new "family member", please feel free to call me.
