Just a note from me - I found this ancient log in some old email files I had and although having used the existence of this log as a "bartering" tool with S'riv, I never thought I would post it. Blame it on nostalgia and the fact that S'riv's player is no longer around Pern MUSH to get me back for it :)

Weyrling Barracks - Benden Weyr

Ryialla walks in from the bowl.
Ryialla has arrived.
S'riv walks in from the bowl.
S'riv has arrived.

Karise looks over her shoulder. Done at last. With almost a casual
smoothing back of her hair, she glances to Kindre, then K'tyn. But, maybe
as a grace, riders enter, and she salutes them instead.

Ryialla barks out, "Awright. Barracks inspection."
S'riv wrinkles his nose, "I had forgotten the shardin' stench."
Ryialla returns the salutes crisply.
S'riv ignores the salutes.

Ryialla takes a deep breath..and breaks character completely. "Faugh. So
did I. And I wanted to come visit?"

Kindre blinks, eyes widen as she salutes, "Ma'am...Sir..."
K'tyn smiles at Kindre. "That would be great, I guess,"

Karise falls back into her former stance, unoffended. She's got nothing to
hide, nothing messy. So she falls back into place, hands behind her back,
form as straight as a lance.

S'riv shrugs, "Ya always had strange ideas Ryi."
Ryialla waves a hand. "Oh,geez. Stop that. I wasn't serious."

Karise nods, "Then, if you will excuse me, sir, m'am." She walks towards
the bowl, and out. Karise moves through the opening to the west, heading
toward the bowl. Karise has left.

Ryialla sighs. "Karise.."
S'riv chuckles, "I can e'en scare them out o' their homes..." he states
sadly.
Kindre shakes her head, offering only, "She's upset, Ma'am..."
Ryialla has disconnected.
S'riv sighs, "I hope I didna upset them."

Kindre blinks a bit again, the shakes her heaad, "No...S'riv...Karise had
a...hard evening is all."

S'riv nods and tries to find a seat, "May I?" he asks politly.
S'riv says "I know this be yer space..I"
S'riv says "I'll leave if ya like."
>From Erinyth's couch, Karise has disconnected.

Kindre looks at K'tyn and then shrugs, smiling a bit nervously, "Of
course, Si...um...surely."

K'tyn is still looking after Karise, stupidly holding out a wineskin. He
is startled when riders enter, and salutes belatedly, /thwapping/ himself
with said 'skin. "Sir! Ma'am!"

S'riv chuckles, "Stop that, weyrlin'..I be invadin' yer home...ya shouldna
salute m' here no matter what others say."

K'tyn sighs as Karise goes to sleep, "Anyone want some wine?" He raises
the skin. "It's from Ista...yessir, S'riv."

S'riv smiles and takes the skin, taking a hearty draugh from it, "no
bad....but benden be better." he hands the skin back, "Thank ya
lad....K'tyn isna it?"

Kindre offers, quietly, "But we are supposed to listen to them...T'fian
and the rest, and the Leaders first, S'riv...Sir...I know you aren't fond
of it, but..we have to...first...one of our first lessons." Smirking a bit
at K'tyn, she nods, "I do...I'm ju st going to sleep soon, anyhow," she
shrugs at her long nighttunic, "Sorry 'bout Karise..."

K'tyn nods, "Yessir." He smiles ingenuously. "We met at the 'springs?"

S'riv chuckles, whiping his forehead with a dirty hand, "Aye, so we did..I
be sorry, names are no m' strong suit."

K'tyn shrugs at Kindre. "I /didn't/ do anythnig wrong. Well... not a lot.
I mean, I was just flirting...If she chooses to be hurt by that....well
then." He smiles bleakly. "Not a whole lot I can do about it." K'tyn
glances at S'riv, noting dirty hand and all. He grins. "Sir, can you tell
me something?"

S'riv nods, "If Ican laddie."

Kindre nods at K'tyn, "I know...crackdust, I didn't say you did...um, may
I have some wine, though? Mayhap?" Then she quickly quiets, half
anticipating K'tyn's question.

K'tyn takes a deep breath. "We were wondering. How... can you know you're
in love? I mean, what is it?"

K'tyn hands Kindre the 'skin, smiling.

S'riv almost laughs, but stops himself, "Shells....I certainly donna be
the one ta ask..I've made so many mistakes with women.." he sighs a bit,
his smile sad, "So many." Hshakes it off and moves on, "Ya ask m' the
hardest question there be."

S'riv grins slightly, "An'..I donna think there be an easy answer...it be
different for e'eryone I think."

Kindre blinks, "We?" Her hands grasp the wineskin and she take a good two,
small gulps. Face wincing she hands it back, "I was just guessing, tho,
about it... different," she picks up, "how so? I mean, for each person?"

K'tyn looks at the older bronzerider, then sighs. "I wish someone could
just /tell/ me."

S'riv smiles nicely, seeming to be a nice guy for now at least, "So do I
k'tyn...been wishin' somone could tell m' the answer for turns now."

K'tyn offers S'riv more wine, after downing some himself. "This isn't bad.
Different, but not bad..."

S'riv bites his lip and talks about himself..not easy for him to do,
"Lass..ya see..IN a weyr, sometimes Love an' lust get confused..especially
with riders." he pauses, "I suppose I have had m' share o' both...but,
when ya be in love..I donna think ya sto p ta ask if ya are or no...at
least I donna."

K'tyn smiles helplessly. "I wish it were..." he stops. Blinks. "That it,
then. If you are, you know it, without a doubt? And if you don't, it's
something else?"

S'riv says "take m' weyrmate..Kerlyn. Darlin' lass..she b' much younger
than m', so I didna e'er even think o' her like that...until one day it
just dawned on m' that she were somone I missed more than anythin' when
she were gone...She were the first pers on I looked for in the morn', last
one in the eve..anytime I had somethin' ta say, Iwould look for her..""

S'riv seems happy to talk about his bluerider weyrmate, "She be the finest
lass I have e'er known." he clears his throat and tris to look gruff
again, "That were the answer for m'...I canna tell ya how ya will know."

K'tyn nods, listening closely. His eyes are intent on S'riv's, so as not
to mistake any possible meaning. He nods, slowly, sitting back and
thinking.

Kindre shrugs, "I haven't dealt with the lust part...Faranth, not the love
part, either...nevermind...this is K'tyn's question...he's the one having,
uh, questions." Smiling at the tones of S'riv speaking of his weyrmate,
she grins almost hopefully, noddi ng.

K'tyn glances at Kindre, then S'riv. "Lal was right. I..." He pauses, and
his face becomes masklike. "I d-d-d-don't love her," he mumbles.

S'riv doesn't seem comfortable, or used to, being the center of attention,
He nods to Kindre, "It be a fact o' weyrlife...yer dragons will soon start
ta have certain...feelin's...if they havena already. It will be hard ta
ignore.." he laughs a bit, "I rem ember when I were a weyrlin'....I fell
on an' broke m' own arm ta o'ercome some feelin's Cioth were havin' for
'rinas gold, leilanth.."

K'tyn nods at S'riv.

S'riv turns to K'tyn, "Laddy....please...donna let anythin' I say
influence ya. What I think an' say b' my opinion, no more, no less. With
m' history with women...some people would say I be no a good person ta be
talkin' ta."

"K'tyn," Kindre asks, "may I have another taste?" She then blinks, picking
up first on the stutterings, "What, K'tyn? You do that when you get
nervous...talk like that...maybe...?" Frowning a little, she nods, "Herath
is just over a turn...she feels nothi ng yet..."

S'riv smiles a bit to Kindre, "yer a goldrider...it will be worse for ya."
he grins, "I try ta keep Cioth away from flights...mostly selfish o' m'..I
ne'er enjoyed what happens durin' them. E'er since he caught Merla's gold,
Kimbrith...he has had little i nterest in green flights...but he still
canna o'ercome the urge ta rise for golds..it be far more intense for
golds..an' goldriders, I be afraid."

Benden Weyr> S'riv says, "yeah, never figured out..Saer tries to scare
weyrlings, but they seem to go out of their way to talk with him:)"

K'tyn drinks some more wine. He nods, "Struth, though." He hands the skin
to Kindre, then looks at S'riv. "I'd do anything for Lal, I would...but
that goes for all my wingmates, to one degree, or another," he sighs, then
swallows suddenly flushing bright red at the mere though of Gold's
Flights...

Benden Weyr> K'tyn grins at Saer. "Thats cuz we know yer nuthin' but a big
softie. :)

S'riv notices the flush and chuckles a bit, "It be the same for ya,
bronzerider...yer dragon will drag ya in more than others do...save golds,
an' mayhap proddy greens, yer dragon an' ya will be more sensative ta each
other...an ta the moods o' other drag ons than anyone else.

S'riv grins to K"tyn, "Kerlyn an' I started as freidnly wingmates..."

K'tyn carefully doesn't glance at Kindre, until he gets his emotions under
control. He blinks, smiling at S'riv. "Thank you, S'riv. I think that's
the best advice I've heard." He blinks at the mention of Kerlyn. His eyes
flicker to S'riv's, then Kindre's. "Really? Just wingmates?"

Kindre tries not to frown her obvious worry over this, but baarely
manages, "I've spken to Jehrina, once, and we've a lesson soon on it...I'd
rather not know...not yet, S'riv..." Drowning quite a bit of wine from the
passed skin, she cringes again, "K'tyn ," comes out in a croak, "you may
love her...Karise may love you...jays, I don't know." She shakes off the
taste to listen to S'riv. "Really?" she asks, "more so than Herath and I?"
Then, smiling, she looks at K'tyn, "See? You and Lal may just be starting
 early...kind of..."

S'riv nods, "Aye..there be a natural bond there. A reason ta talk, a need
even. It can become more, as Kerlyn an' I did...there already is atrust in
bein' wingmates..sometimes it be a natural extension..
S'riv OOC meant to type proddy females, golds and greens:)

Long distance to Kindre: K'tyn HAHs! :) Trying to push me into Lal's arms?
heee!
>From afar, Kindre just giggles, hey, now, being a true friend here I is! :)

S'riv grins to Kindre, "Aye well..golds be a special case."

S'riv says "get ta know 'rina an Merla...an' Asfala, they will help ya
more than ya can know..they have much knowledge for ya lass."

S'riv says "how ta deal with things."
S'riv says "things like what we speak of."

Kindre frowns, a determinded look on her face, "Not to pull this talk to
me, but, S'riv, why special? Because they have clutches? Oh, I am trying,
Si...riv...I kind of bug Jehrina a lot...deal with what things? Crackdust,
why does everyone dance around th is subject when I'm around?"

K'tyn thinks carefully about what S'riv has said. "So, 'tis possible, that
this...'natural bond' I feel for my wingmates... It can extend into
something else?" He breaks off, waiting for S'riv to answer Kindre's
question first.

Kindre shakes her head, "Wait, K'tyn first...sorry, S'riv, his situation
is more important than mine right now..."

S'riv chuckles, "All these questions be good...an' good ta be asked." He
tries toexplain how he sees it, not being a gold rider, "Aye, clutches be
a shardin' big part o' it. The weyrs depend on golds ta give us a new
generation o' riders. But it be more.  Yer dragon will be much harder for
males ta ignore when she be proddy, much harder than greens indeed. That,
by default..makes you more atractive ta male riders..especially bronze an'
brown, than many other people..the other bit be that yer goin' ta lead us
all someday, an' power tends ta attrack some people..."

Kindre nods slowly, staying quiet.

S'riv turns to K'tyn, "Aye lad, it can. It be natural for it...especially
in weyrlin's wings..ya all be experiencing all this new wonder as a group,
t'gether...it be a given ya will bond well." he grins, "I still look upon
m' weyrlin' classmates different than any other rider, even m' weyrmate."

K'tyn frowns at Kindre. "No, it's not. You're more important than I am,
than I ever will be. " He grins sweetly. He nods at S'rivs answer to
Kindre, then looks again at the rider with new respect in his eyes.
"Sir... You can't know what that means. Someon e telling me how it /is/
and not some...some kind of allegory."

S'riv stops one line of thinking now, "K'tyn, you be just as important as
any other rider in the weyr...e'ery rider be important, just in different
ways. You be just as important as her, as m', as Jehrina. It donna
matter...riders be riders."

Kindre smiles a bit, the heavier information being stored away, if only
for now, "Really? About your fellow Weyrling?" She smiles, "I wondered if
I'd still feel this way tnen turns from now." Blinking, she leans back,
"I'm no more important than you...or any of us...we all contribute to the
Weyr, period."

K'tyn shakes his head. "There'd be none of us," he says looking at Herath,
"If there were none like her. Or you." K'tyn grins.

S'riv blushes a bit at the compliment, "Laddie, I have n'er been accused
o' bein' political..I say it how I see it, an' that donna always make m' a
popular person." he grins again, "Yer bond with yer weyrlin' class be
different than anythin' else..an' it donna die." he points towards the
door, "Ryialla there, were a weyrlin' with m', as were P'tran, jehrina,
N'fan...many others. I still gota them when I need help, or need an ear,
or just want t a see ole' friends.. I trust them more than jsut about any
ot her rider I know."

Kindre counters, "There'd be no Herath, or Dyinaht, or Kimbrenth, if not
for bronzes...Prometh may well sire a clutch, derheart."

K'tyn blinks at S'riv and Kindre, holding up his hands as he hears what
they are saying..." I give in. We're /both/ equally important..." He
grins, then looks at Saer again. "I think I understand what you mean, sir.
It's a trust, not like any other; forged in our mutual trials. A bond not
easily or lightly broken."

S'riv laughs, "Aye....Prometh is gonna be a shardin' large dragon...an' a
fine one, for he has fine lineage. Avoth an' Kimbrith sired both Leilanth
an' Laerth, as well as m' Cioth. Avoth were a small bronze, but a fine one
all the same. Laerth an' Leilant h have had 2 /fine/ clutches...an' yer
dragons will carry it on, I have no doubt..benden's be a fine, proud
tradition.

S'riv nods to K'tyn, "Aye, trust be the heart o' the batter.
S'riv OOC laughs, matter..matter.

Kindre then nods to S'riv, "I can understand...honest...I'd risk my life
and trust it for everyone I'm being taught with....you were in the same
class as the Weyrleaders?" She smirks a bit, imagining them all at this
point.

S'riv grins,"Aye....hard ta believe, no?" He sighs, "I think they be
dissapointed in m' most o' the time, but I try...thank the egg Jehrina be
a patient sister."

K'tyn clears his throat, thinking hard, though he nearly giggles at the
slip of the tongue. He does start to chuckle openly at the idea of P'tran
or Jehrina being as confused or lost as he seems to be.

K'tyn looks up, "Sir, I'm not disappointed in you... frankly, I admire you
as much as our weyrleaders because we /can/ talk to you." He smiles.
"That's important."

S'riv blushes, being caught completely offguard, "Aye well...ya hardly
know m' lad. I talk plain, but what I have ta say may no always be what
people want ta hear."

Kindre frowns, "Disappointed? I don't see how...you're kind enough to let
us sip wine /and/ give us your insight...shells...like Jehrina has said to
me twice, 'We've all een Weyrlings.' It is nice to be able to talk
so...candidly...and know we won't get t he vaguee answers."

K'tyn chokes at the thought of asking Jehrina or P'tran his "What is
love?"  question. He nods firmly at Kindre. "Right."

S'riv grins himself, imagining the same thing, "Shells..'rina woulda loved
t see this...I doubt she woulda believed I woulda had this conversation
with anyone, especially weyrlin's."

S'riv smiles kindly, "As Isay, ya have no known m' long..there be much ta
m' I donna be proud o', ya just have no seen m' bad side yet."

K'tyn cocks his head. "You fight for those you love, you fly fall, you
speak straight from the hip... what more could anyone ask of you?"

S'riv smiles slightly, "I've made afool o' the weyr, I've embarassed the
leadership..shards, I e'en stabbed another rider."

Kindre smiles, "Bad side? Like when you berated Kethran for calling me
weyrwoman ot long after we all Impressed? Shells...mayhap not your worst
side, but a bit of a bit side, I think..." Hearing K'tyn speak, she
frowns, "Forget what I just said...I'd rath er you be honest..." Blink?

K'tyn nods, slowly. "That may be true, sir. But, I reserve the right to
make my own opinion about you.

Kindre adds softly, "I've not even graduated and already embarrassed
Benden."

S'riv chuckles, "Aye...that do be yer right..I canna stop that. Just donna
take m' bad side for granted..it do be there, e'en if I try ta hide it.
Events lately have made m' nervous that I will make a mistake an' people
will lose their lives again.

S'riv seems to be talking more to himself than anything. he looks up and
catches part of what Kindre says, "That be a wee bit different..weyrlin's
are expected ta make mistakes such as that...riders hould know better."

S'riv shakes his had, "But it be no matter...we all go on an' do what we
need ta do."

Kindre just shakes her head, waving a little for the skin, "Oh...true
enough, if you say so, S'riv..." she swallows the 'Sir'. Smiling, she
says, "I'm so glad you talked to us so..free-like." She nods, then, "We
try, at the least, Si...S'riv."

S'riv grins, "Yer weyrlinmasters should talk ta ya plain..ours did, an' it
be the best way ta learn..this al be new ta ya, an' I think we riders
forget that."

S'riv smiles and stands, "I will no keep ya longer." S'riv says, "if ya
need anythin', any o' ya...just ask m', I will do what I can."

Kindre smiles again, "Thank you..again..." she nods.

K'tyn nods at S'riv. "Sir?"

S'riv clears his throat, "now get some rest, weyrlin's." He pauses, "Aye?"

Kindre pulls up her furs and looks at K'tyn.

K'tyn smiles, "If you need anything from me... just ask. I'll do what I
can." He winks at Kindre.

S'riv grins, "Aye, I will remember that." he pauses and salutes crisply on
his way out, "Sleep well."

S'riv moves through the opening to the west, heading toward the bowl.
S'riv has left.
