Fort Lauderdale High School is proud of Farzaneh Fouladi, one of fourteen Broward County seniors among 295 nominees from public and private high schools to win a Miami Herald Silver Knight Award. Ms. Fouladi won the Social Science category for creating an educational program to raise student awareness of AIDS/HIV. Fort Lauderdale High students also won honorable mentions in two other Silver Knight categories: Tracey Foglia for Speech and Rocio Polanco for Foreign Language. Silver Knight Awards are given to academically gifted high school students who use their knowledge and talent to make significant contributions to their communities. There are fourteen categories of awards: Art, Athletics, Business, Drama, English, Foreign Language, General Scholarship, Journalism, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science, Speech and Vocational Technical. Winners are awarded a Silver Knight statue and medallion, $1500 and a round-trip American Airlines ticket to anywhere in the United States. Honorable mentions receive $500 and an engraved plaque. Congratulations to the top graduating seniors at Fort Lauderdale High School who were accepted at many fine colleges and universities including Harvard, Princeton, Duke, University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, New York University, Columbia, Wellesley, University of Miami, Barnard, Colorado College, American, Tulane, Emory, University of Florida, and Florida State. Fort Lauderdale High has a tradition of annually sending many students to fine institutions of higher education. Jason Wethington, a junior at Fort Lauderdale High School and President of the Student Government Association, has been elected Student Advisor to the Broward County School Board. Jason was chosen by the Broward County Association of Student Councils. He will represent the students from all elementary, middle and high schools at School Board meetings. At the Florida state meet held recently in Orlando, Fort Lauderdale High School debaters Karen Milord became Varsity State Champion in Oral Interpretation of Literature; Monique Robinson was Novice State Champion in Oral and Dramatic Interpretation; and the teams of Troy Roth - Richard Fowler and Nicole Witte - Shannon Lynch were chosen Co-Champions in Policy Debate. Eleven "Flying L" debaters qualified for the Catholic Forensic League national competition and four qualified for the National Forensic League national competition. To further develop their skills, several team members will attend debate camps this summer at Stanford University, the University of Michigan, Wake Forest University, University of Iowa, University of Kentucky, and Catholic University.
Twenty-seven Sunrise Middle School seventh grade students qualified to take the College Board SAT test by achieving a 95th or higher percentile in their sixth grade standardized test scores. The Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) offers this opportunity to academically gifted students. Those who score at a certain level on the SAT are offered the chance to study at Duke or other universities and colleges during the summer. Eleven Sunrise students who took the SAT earned scores qualifying them for participation in the summer TIP program. Sunrise Middle School is proud to be the Broward County Boys' Swimming Champions for the third year in a row. The Sunrise Falcons broke five district records in the competition. Top school swimmers included Drac and Janson Wigo, and Altair and Almir Dealencar. Sunrise Middle School students competed successfully in the Broward County Teachers of Mathematics Competition that included both public and private schools in the county. The Sunrise Falcons teams won Third Place in the Eighth Grade Division and Fourth Place in the Sixth Grade Division. They also placed first in the team competition among the Broward County Title One schools. On May 3, Harbordale Elementary School's three fourth grade classes were special guests of U.S. Naval destroyers anchored at Port Everglades during Fleet Week in Fort Lauderdale. Students and teachers met crew members of the USS Porter, USS Stout and the USS Deyo and toured the ships. Harbordale then hosted sailors and officers from the three destroyers at their school on May 6, presenting their spring musical, "Proud to be American," to their military guests. Harbordale Elementary is now accepting grade K-5 applications for the 2002-2003 school year.
