   On Saturday, December 8, the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay will travel through Fort Lauderdale en route to the Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah - home ot the XIX Olympic Winter Games. The OlympicFlame will travel more than 13,500 miles and pass through 46 states in 65 days. To celebrate the power of inspiration across America, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee (SLOC), Coca-Cola and Chevrolet have selected more than 11,500 people to carry the Olympic Flame through their communities. Among those chosen as torchbearers isThomas Tapp, former Fort Lauderdale parks and recreation director.

   Tapp, who served as Fort Lauderdale's Parks and Recreation Director for 18 years, was nominated by the City of Fort Lauderdale. He is a "source of inspiration for the Fort Lauderdale community and his contributions to the City are endless," said City Manager Floyd Johnson.

   "His work positively impacted the City's major facilities including the beach, Riverwalk, Carter and Holiday Parks. He was successful in recruiting the Baltimore Orioles for Spring Training and the Air and Sea Show," said Johnson. "During his tenure, the Department received the National Recreation and Park Association's Gold Medal Award for excellence in parks and recreation. He found ways to improve and enhance neighborhood parks and youth programming, making Fort Lauderdale a great place to live."

   The Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay will begin at 9:00 a.m. with more than 60 torchbearers from the South Florida area. The route spans from the Marriott Marina, located at 1881 S.E. 17th St., to Esplanade Park, located at Southeast Second Street and Fourth Avenue at Riverwalk. SLOC will announce details of the route at a later date.
   Residents are encouraged to line the streets that are part of the route, and then proceed to Esplanade Park, which will be transformed into a festive winter playground featuring a variety of activities for all ages, music and food as well.

   "Having this great symbol of the Olympic Movement come through our City will inspire all of us to embody the spirit of unity," said Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle. "It will be a great day for Fort Lauderdale when we cheer on our friends, neighbors, teachers, coaches and loved ones as torchbearers."

   The Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay will begin on December 4, 2001 in Atlanta, Georga and travel to Salt Lake City, Utah for the Opening Ceremonies on February 8, 2002.
