Duties varied during my time at the Post:

Worked regular research rotations. Proficient with Nexis, Dialog, Dow Jones, Internet, DBT/Autotrack, and other databases. Supported the equipment (Computers, Printers, Microfilm Reader/Printer, Fax machine). Developed the first Internet training program for the newsroom. Wrote print and web based training guides for the newsroom and library staff. Put up a web version of Kidzette, a newspaper written by local school children.

Computer expertise (PC plus some MAC and UNIX skills):

Set up databases and spreadsheets to keep track of purchases, y2k issues, subscriptions, and the reference collection, using Excel, Quattro Pro, Access, AskSam and other software. Evaluated and recommended software and hardware for library use. Troubleshooted computer problems. Modified my personal website into an intranet for the library and was the webmaster. Worked on both the electronic text and photo archives. Skilled with HTML.

1989 to 1994

Overall administration of the news library:

Formulated policies and procedures to answer current and future information needs. Recruited, trained, supervised, 7 full-time librarians. Selection and acquisition of reference materials. Marketed library services to the corporate offices, news bureaus and association members. Oversaw the maintenance of the AP archives online (Vutext), and provided support for users.

Special projects:

Expanded the online resources and use of computers for research. Proposed a web-based research delivery system, including a CD-ROM network, which came to fruition after my departure. Wrote a DBase III+ program to maintain information lists. Setup a research service for outside callers and association members seeking extra services.

Photography Department:

Programmed a billing system using DBase III+, coordinated charges, drafted invoices, and expedited payments to free-lance photographers.

Support staff:

Involved in the transition of the library from a printed news archive to an electronic archive. Developed the procedures used to maintain the files on Vutext. Edited electronic text files, indexed and abstracted news stories. Provided reference and research to the newsroom. Microfilmed files. Maintained clipping file.
