About The News Researchers Graffiti Pages |
PAGES ARE NO LONGER BE UPDATED.
|
The News Researchers Graffiti Pages was created in 1985 by Barbara Gellis Shapiro as a bookmarks list shared with fellow news librarians. It evolved into a popular starting point for librarians, journalists and journalism students. The site joined the Journalism and Research Resources Webring as a convenience to researchers. The site never accepted advertising and received no financial support. I decided to discontinue maintaining the site at the end of 2004. |
Why Graffiti Pages? |
I liked the look of the white brick background. The text against the brick wall reminded me of the notes written on walls next to public telephones, hence the graffiti image. |
What Topics Are Covered? |
Links to reference materials are available for all topics generally covered by mainstream newspapers. In addition, there are pages for professional development, and computer & internet literacy. The fun page covers topics that may be reported as lifestyle, or filler, as well as pages I find interesting.
|
How were Links Selected? |
Reference materials were carefully evaluated for inclusion.Primary document sources, raw data and links lists by subject specialists make up the bulk of this site. Guides to using the information, tools for manipulating the information, fee-based services that provided primary resource materials, and sources of illustrative matter were also selected. Reference sources skew toward usefulness to the media in the United States, and are available in the English language. Profit making sites were included on a separate commercial resources page if that resource was considered a major or unique resource for the industry. PLEASE DO NOT SUGGEST NEW SITES, as the site is no longer being maintained. |
Why were Links Rejected? |
Sites that were generally not considered appropriate for the Graffiti Pages, lacked authenticity, were primarily profit-making venues, had data that could not be documented as a valid source, presented copyrighted material without the express written consent of the copyright owner, or covered such a narrow topic that its usefulness to the media is too limited.Sites that had excessive advertising and lacked a unique and valuable free resource were not be selected. I also tended to reject sites that were so busy, or so poorly designed, that you had to work very hard to find something useful. "Unofficial" topic sites that included links or banners connecting to pornographic materials were generally not selected for inclusion. |

The pages were edited using HTMLed Pro software. Illustrations were edited with Paint Shop Pro. TopStyle was used for style sheets.
Most of the Artwork on my pages was gathered from around the Internet. Some were used "as is," others modified by myself.
Some of the web artists whose work was displayed, include: David Bouman (his original page is no longer available, but several mirror sites still display his work), Gilbert Hyatt (whose icon site seems to have disappeared as well), Paul Charovkine (stoplight animation on the transportation page), and Mark Anthony Bertone (walking stick figure on the fun page).
The animated gears on the jobs page was a free sample from PhotoDisc at GettyImages.
The titles were created at FlamingText.com
The source of the white brick graffiti wall is unknown.
Credits for Javascripts are contained within the coding itself. |
